CDC: Release the Numbers!

Update: Thanks for raising a cry! The CDC has finally released their statistics. CNN story: CDC: More Americans HIV-positive than previously believed

Did you know that the new HIV infection rate in the United States has increased 50% in the last few years?

Yeah, we couldn’t believe it either!

But according to sources close to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recent data has shown that new HIV infections have jumped from about 40,000 a year to over 60,000. Yet, the CDC and other federal agencies still tell us that annual new infections are only 40,000 a year. The new numbers have yet to be released to the public, leaving many unanswered questions.

As a leading public health agency funded with our tax dollars, the CDC has the responsibility to keep the public informed about the HIV/AIDS epidemic in our country. But silence and complacency about HIV/AIDS in America has become the norm, even at the top federal levels. The CDC needs to publicly release the new statistics so that more effective prevention and treatment programs can be implemented in our
communities.

What can I do?

First, call the CDC and tell them how you feel. Call them up and ask them why they’re not telling us about the spike in new infections. Remember, they’re funded by our tax dollars and have the responsibility to serve the health of our nation. Call them at 1-800-311-3435.

Then, draw attention to this problem in your community. Print fliers, email links, hold press conferences, upload videos on YouTube. Be creative and spread the word!
