Wal-Mart threatens to come to Worcester
A 209,000-square-foot Wal-Mart Supercenter is part of a shopping center planned on 44 acres in Quinsigamond Village where U.S. Steel once operated foundries along the Blackstone River.
Anyone else concerned about this?
Battlemart has resources on defending the community.
Some screenings of "WAL-MART: The High Cost of Low Price" should be announced soon.
Most American cities at least feign disgust when Wal-Mart lawyers come knocking. What, with its broken business model, destructive power over local economies and general douchebaggery. But in our case, Preservation Worcester showed up to offer their support. P-r-e-s-e-r-v-a-t-i-o-n Worcester. Apparently Preservation Worcester LOVES three dollar mini-blinds and a great deal on potting soil.
I'm concerned about this and I know I'm not alone. I was certainly surprised that a project of this magnitude was nearly approved without me hearing anything about it before. The article in the T&G made it sound like there is no voice of opposition or even concern. A controversial company like Wal-Mart, accused with a wide range of unfair/illegal labor practices communities wants to come into our city. Yes, the largest company in the world is on the verge of transforming a community, and the media has pretty much ignored it. I'm in the process of gathering more information about the proposal and what it means for the city. What does this plan look like? What does the city gain from this deal? I'm looking to connect with other concerned people of Worcester. Let's put our heads together and get informed. We should be talking about this!
