Worcester Immigrant Coalition is a grassroots organization dedicated to advocate for the rights of new immigrants families in the city of Worcester. The Coalition was formed in 2006 through the involvement of different grassroots organizations, social service agencies and city residents.
The Coalition's formed in 2006 to organize Worcester's May1st Immigration Reform rally as part of the national "Dia Sin Inmigrantes" (Day without Immigrants) campaign. Organizers were pleased by the turnout, and surprised and energized by how rooted the national boycott became in Worcester. In Worcester, organizers tracked sixty-seven businesses and organizations that announced they would close on May 1st, 2006, and the Worcester Public Schools estimated that 800-900 students stayed home.
